A family farm on fifteen acres of Potohar, near Fateh Jang. We grow Paulownia for timber, raise breeding heifers, and keep our own water.

Jan Farms sits just outside Fateh Jang, where the Potohar plateau flattens into grass and red soil. About ten acres are under trees and crops. The rest is fodder, sheds, a cottage and the dam.

Nothing here grows without stored water. The dam holds it through the dry months. Solar pumps lift it, and drip pipes carry it to each tree.

Our first trial trees reached about twenty feet in eighteen months. That was enough to plant the field.

The young plantation stands in rows twelve feet apart, each tree on its own drip line. We prune for a single straight stem, because straight timber is what sells. Harvest is planned five to six years after planting.

We buy and raise young crossbred heifers, feed them mostly on what the farm grows, and sell them close to calving. The buyer gets an animal that is settled, in condition, and about to milk.

We prefer local crosses with Friesian or Jersey blood. They cope with Potohar summers better than pure imported breeds. Fodder is Napier grass cut fresh from the field beside the sheds, with maize and a small amount of concentrate.

The citrus orchard was here before the Paulownia. Around it we are planting other species to see what suits this soil.
